Cabinet With Paintings Under Glass. Italy, Mid-18th Century.
Cabinet with reverse glass painted panels, Central Italy, second half of the 18th century.
Elegant ebonized wood cabinet, featuring a raised section with small drawers decorated with reverse glass paintings depicting hunting scenes, landscapes, and figures in 17th-century costumes. The structure, inspired by Renaissance and Flemish models, is composed of architectural drawers framed by moulded cornices and carved beading, alternating with gilded fillets and turned details.
Each drawer front is embellished with a narrative scene, likely inspired by chivalric or pastoral traditions, characterized by vibrant colours and fine figurative detail, typical of the period’s craftsmanship.
The cabinet is supported by a matching table base, also ebonized and profiled, with fluted legs and shaped stretchers. The base likely dates to the second half of the 19th century, as is often the case with such composite furnishings.
Very good condition, with minor wear consistent with age; paintings are well preserved and the structure is solid and complete. The back panel includes a thin metal sheet, added at a later time, probably for conservation purposes.
