Claudio Tozzi participated in the Neo-Figuration (Nueva Figuración) movement, which marked artistic creation in Latin America in the 1960s, aiming to revive figurative art after a period dominated by abstract art. Many argue that this return to figuration occurred within a context of significant political and social upheaval in Europe and America. Tozzi was even more influenced by Pop Art, another international movement of the 1960s. Some Latin American Neo-Figurative artists, such as Tozzi, Felipe Ehrenberg, and Rubens Gerchman, turned to Pop Art rather than Expressionist and painterly styles. According to some art critics, Pop Art is both a reflection of and a critique of capitalist consumerism and mass communication networks in society. It is generally a vivid, vibrant, and colorful representation; but many artists, including Tozzi, strove to make it a critique of the society around them.
