Manuel Benedito Vives (Valencia, 1875- 1963, Madrid).
Born in Valencia in 1875, he studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts, then in the studio of Joaquín Sorolla, whom he still considers his mentor. A scholarship holder at the Academy of Rome between 1901 and 1904, he also traveled throughout Europe, during his stay in Italy and later. He participated in various exhibitions in Spain (national fine arts exhibitions and personal exhibitions in museums and institutions), in Europe (Paris, London, Munich, Brussels, Berlin, several editions of the Venice Biennale, etc.) and in the United States (Philadelphia, Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, etc.). His work received numerous awards and distinctions (first medals, academic prizes, etc.). A painter with a solid technical background, he always maintained an aesthetic ideal based on admiration for the Spanish pictorial tradition. Influenced in his youth by Sorolla's luminism, interested in genre themes, landscapes and still lifes, he is best known for his work as a portraitist, close to the sobriety and elegance of some English painters and the sobriety he appreciated in Spanish painting. Until his death in 1963, he enjoyed a warm critical reception and wide popular recognition.
Works in numerous museums: Prado, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Cuba, Nagasaki etc.
Works at "Fundacion de Manuel Benedito".
