Yves Brayer discovered his calling in childhood, drawing with fervor and committing scenes to paper that already demonstrated an innate sense of color. While his father, Victor Brayer, then a captain, was on the front lines of the Great War, Yves and his mother stayed in Provence. As if by a first glimpse of destiny, the budding painter explored the landscapes that would later play a dominant role in his work. The young man grew up dividing his time between two passions: art and horses. A rider like his father, he was encouraged by him to pursue a military career. The family settled in Paris in 1924, when Commandant Brayer was assigned to the office of the Minister of War. Yves enrolled in the 11th Cuirassier Regiment at the École Militaire and also began attending evening classes in Paris, frequenting the academies of Montparnasse. His passion for painting was then fulfilled by his introduction to life drawing and his frequent visits to Parisian museums. During a refresher course at the École Militaire, his kneecap and tibia were broken after being kicked by the horse in front of him. The operation and rehabilitation definitively ended young Brayer's military career. Rejected from the entrance exam for the École des Beaux-Arts, he was nevertheless taken on as an independent student by the painter Lucien Simon (1861–1945). The following year, he was admitted and was awarded the Chenavard Prize in 1927 for his large composition, The Riding School. His academic career was brilliant. Brayer was only 22 years old when he made his first state acquisition. He was 26 at the time of his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris. In 1945, the painter married Hermione Falex, who appears in many of his portraits. It was with her that he cycled through Provence for two months. Les Baux and the Camargue captivated him, and he would continually return to these landscapes.
