Joseph Levin, born in Saint Petersburg in 1894, after associating with Larionov and the Russian avant-garde and learning calligraphy in China, went to Paris in 1926 and then to New York in 1935, where he opened a studio in Greenwich Village. Returning to France in 1970, he died near Avignon in 1979. Joseph Levin was also a writer and poet, and a costume designer for the Ballets Russes. He exhibited in numerous cities around the world, including Paris, London, Amsterdam, New York, Washington, Moscow, and Rome.
