Large Antique Clay/terracotta Dish With Japanese-style Art Nouveau Glaze
Very rare, magnificent large bowl or dish, likely late 19th or early 20th century, made of clay or terracotta. Sublime Japanese-style decoration of flowers, daisies, bindweed, and chrysanthemums, as well as a bird in flight, perhaps a swallow, in polychrome relief and hand-enameled. In the background, wild grasses and other wildflowers are depicted in fine gilding, with a gilded rim and interior recesses. Unsigned. It may have been a stand for a pot or vase; a hole in the back could allow it to be used as a wall ornament. 35.5 cm in diameter, 2 cm high. In very good condition, however, with some signs of use and age, including some fading of the gilding, fine natural crazing in the glaze, minor rubbing, wear, and subtle variations in color and stains. Overall, a harmonious piece with no chips or cracks. Weighs between 2 and 3 kg.
