These interesting memoirs, in their original edition, concern a close and faithful friend of the Overlord disgraced by Louis XIV, Nicolas Fouquet: Jean Hérault de Gourville; "Memoirs of Monsieur de Gourville" concerning the affairs in which he was employed by the Court in 1724. 2 volumes in 12mo, full mottled glazed calf, smooth spines with gilt tooling, titles and volume numbers in red morocco, marbled endpapers and edges, 19th-century bookplate. Printed in Paris by Estienne Ganeau, rue Saint-Jacques opposite the Saint-Séverin Fountain, with the arms of Dombes. 1724. From the early youth of Louis XV. These interesting books come from the library of Madame Prioleau de Lavoie, wife of Monsieur de Jonquière (handwritten note in pencil at the beginning of the works)... "Memoirs of Monsieur de Gorville," concerning the affairs in which he was employed by the Court from 1642 to 1698. This complete original edition in two volumes is by Jean Hérault, Baron de Gouville, a French memoirist, first Valet de Chambre to La Rochefoucauld, then Intendant of the Army of Catalonia (1653). He then entered the service of Nicolas Fouquet (1655-1661). Condemned to death in 1661, he was forced into exile in the Netherlands. In 1669, Prince Louis II de Condé obtained letters of pardon for him and appointed him Intendant...
