Silver Powder Compact, Marchak, 20th Century
A rectangular solid silver powder compact in its black leather case, decorated with geometric lines. It opens with a discreet push button on the side, revealing a mirror and a powder compartment closed by a flap.
The signature “MARCHAK” and serial number (53132) are on the reverse of the lid, above the mirror.
A Minerva hallmark and a maker's mark, difficult to decipher, are inside the compact.
In 1878, Joseph Marchak, a jeweler, founded his workshop in Kyiv and quickly gained renown, attracting clients from all over the Russian Empire, including Tsar Nicholas II himself. His son, Alexandre, opened a boutique in the heart of Paris in 1919, where his jewelry and other refined accessories were a great success. International expansion continued with the arrival of Jacques Verger, a salesman from a family of jewelers and watchmakers, who developed the brand in the United States and secured prestigious commissions, notably from King Hassan II of Morocco in the 1960s. After closing in 1988, the company was revived in 2005 by a family heir, Daniel Marchac.
