Portrait Of An 18th-century Gentleman
An 18th-century oval miniature portrait of a gentleman. An inscription on the back identifies him as Monsieur Basin, owner of "rounneries" (weaving workshops) in Bolbec, Seine-Maritime. "Rouenneries" were weaving workshops! In the 18th century, the town of Bolbec boasted numerous textile workshops where printed fabrics known as "indiennes" were produced, a process introduced to Europe by the East India Company. Indigo blue was predominant, a very fashionable color at the time, influenced by Chinese porcelain, highly prized in France and imitated by Delftware. This portrait is presented in its original giltwood frame, carved with pearls and featuring a suspension ring. Frame height: 12.5 cm / Portrait height: 8.5 cm.
