Marzio Di Colantonio Ganassini – Battle On Copper, Rome
Artist: Marzio Di Colantonio Ganassini
Magnificent battle painting on copper attributed to Marzio di Colantonio Ganassini (active in Viterbo, died around 1621), depicting a dynamic and crowded equestrian combat scene between cavalry and infantry, with finely detailed figures in the foreground and a broad landscape in the background featuring a fortified city and distant mountains, an excellent example of the pictorial genre known as “battle paintings”, highly popular between the 16th and 18th centuries, particularly within the Italo-Flemish and Dutch traditions of the 17th century; the attribution has been confirmed by Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, a renowned art historian and leading expert in Italian battle painting, who has also authenticated a comparable work by the artist, an Equestrian Battle on copper, thereby confirming the stylistic coherence and authenticity of this work, which represents an object of significant historical and artistic interest for collectors.
