The sculpture depicts Guanyin (Sanskrit: Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara). It is made of bronze, with traces of gilding. Guanyin is a bodhisattva embodying compassion; his name means "to observe sounds," that is, to listen to requests. With his right hand, he makes the Vitarka Mudra gesture, the gesture of teaching. His left hand holds a vase containing nectar or a similar object, which is associated with compassion and the salvation of suffering people.
