Japanese vase decorated with a hand-painted scene of a dragon walking among a group of various figures, including Buddhist monks, samurai and a child. The appearance of the dragon in Japan is considered a good omen; for many centuries it symbolizes strength, courage, wisdom, among others, in the Far East and its element is water.

Satsuma ceramic, hand painted and gilded.

Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912), around 1880. Signed: Ryuzan.
