Monstrance - Reliquary (of The True Cross) In Brass With Passion Instrument Decoration, Late 18th Century
A cast and gilded brass reliquary monstrance resting on a polylobed base (repoussé copper richly decorated with scrolling foliage). The baluster stem supports a sculpted knot and opens to reveal a cruciform glory decorated in high relief with the Instruments of the Passion: ladder, whip, lance, sponge, hammer, pincers, nails, the rooster of denial, as well as figures of adoring angels arranged on either side. In the center, an oval glazed compartment contains relics, presented against a textile background and decorated with gilt filigree, embellished with polychrome glass cabochons. A handwritten label bears the inscription “Sancte Croix” (Holy Cross). German or Austrian work, probably 18th – early 19th century. Wear and oxidation consistent with age.
