"Pair Of Chairs Called "sussex Chairs" Attributed To Philip Webb For Morris And Co., Circa 1899"
A rare find at a more than justified price (currently valued at €3,500 for a pair in good condition), this modernist pair of chairs, whose age is easily forgiven, is surprisingly from late 19th-century England; called "Sussex Chairs" and attributed to Philip Webb for Morris and Co... (none of his production bears a label or stamp...) like those in the Musée d'Orsay. Carefully crafted from turned beechwood and ebonized (blackened to resemble ebony), these avant-garde chairs were 50 years ahead of their time and originated in the mind of Philip Webb in the United Kingdom.
