Born in Savoie, Joseph Communal devoted his work primarily to the mountain landscapes of his native region, the Dauphiné, Switzerland, etc.
A member of the Société des Artistes Français since 1910, he also exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Indépendants.
This view of Le Granier is characteristic of his style: a solid, unadorned technique, in harmony with the ruggedness of the mountain. A canvas of the same subject is in the Musée de Chambéry.
