Artist: Attr. To Karel Spillar (1871-1939)
Mythological scene attributed to the well-known Czech painter and graphic artist Karel Špillar (1871-1939).
Spillar attended high school in Prague, and then, from 1885-1893, studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague under František Ženíšek while also getting his education at the Academy of Fine Arts. Spillar also maintained a studio with his close friend Jan Preisler in Prague. The artist took several trips to Italy, Spain and London. From 1902 to 1908, he was based in France, mainly in Paris and Onival in Normandy, where a new movement involving the Czech artists F. Šimon, Hugo Boettinger and Otakar Španiel was formed. In 1912 Spillar became the successor of Preisler as drawing teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Prague; in 1925 he became a full professor.
Spillar produced many decorative works in the Art Nouveau style; he produced posters, illustrations and magazine covers. Spillar is known today for several murals in Prague and the mosaic Apotheosis of Prague on the local community center. Works by him are in the National Gallery in Prague and in the gallery Západočeská in Pilsen.
