Christoph Weigel the Elder was born on November the 9th, 1654 in Redwitz (Marktredwitz in Bavaria) and died on February the 5th, 1725 in Nuremberg. He was a German engraver, gallery owner and publisher. In 1715-16, he participated in the creation of several maps for Johann Homann's Grosser Atlas über die ganze Welt ("Great Atlas of the World").
