Durand : Sterling Silver Vegetable Tureen With Artichoke, Coat Of Arms, Crown Of A Duke/prince
A sumptuous large solid silver vegetable dish of circular form, with a bulbous body and pinched ribs. The handles are shaped like finely matted leafy branches. The lid is decorated in the same style and surmounted by a prominent finial formed by two artichokes resting on their stems, chased in naturalistic style. Both the body and the lid are engraved with a coat of arms draped in its mantle, all surmounted by a ducal/princely crown. Hallmarked with the French Minerva 1st Standard mark (.950), and the hallmarks of the master silversmith François Durand (hallmark with his name and a bellows), registered in 1828, along with his full signature "DURAND à Paris". This magnificent armorial vegetable dish is in very good condition, with minor scratches from use.
