Watercolor After Jan Dirksz Both, Known As "both Of Italy", Card Players In Front Of Ruins
Artist: Non Signée Réalisée D'après Jan Dirksz Both, Dit Both D'italie
A beautiful watercolor depicting card players seated in front of ruins in Italy. Our watercolor was painted after a picture by Jan Dirksz Both, known as "Both of Italy." The artist did not sign his work. Our watercolor is presented under a mat and sold unframed. Please note a tiny, barely visible tear near the top right three-quarters of the way up (see photo). The original painting was created around 1638-1641, measures 58.5 cm x 50 cm, and was acquired in 1858 by the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes. Jan Both, known as "Both of Italy," was a Dutch painter and engraver born in 1618 and died in 1652. He apprenticed with his brother Andries under Abraham Bloemaert and then traveled to France and Italy. During his travels, he met many artists who inspired him. He and his brother created numerous paintings, with Jan focusing on backgrounds, trees, and landscapes. Interested in classical aesthetics, Jan Both did not hesitate to depict scenes of daily life in ruined settings (as evidenced by the watercolor we are presenting here). Many of his works are held in major international museums (Paris, Nîmes, London, USA, etc.). Dimensions: mat: height 67 cm, width 57 cm; watercolor (visible area): height 53 cm, width 43 cm. Shipping and handling: €25 within mainland France; please contact us for other destinations.
