SAXON VETERINARY OFFICER'S SPIKED HELMET, Sachsen Pickelhaube für Offiziere der Veterinärtruppen, model 1871/1899, Second Reich. 32305 Patent leather helmet, visor rim and all metal fittings in silvered brass, state plate depicting on a background of a radiant sun in stamped silvered brass the oval coat of arms of the House of Saxony in gilt brass with a crancelin, overall in a band crowned and encircled by a laurel wreath. At the base, a shield identical to the crowned arms of Saxony, supported by two rampant lions; on the base, a banner with the state motto "Providentiae Memor" (Providence Remembers). Stamped metal cockades of the type reserved for Saxon officers, in the national colors of black-white-red and the state colors of white-green-white. Each chin strap is composed of 15 domed scales of silvered brass, alternately cut into two or three scallops, decreasing in width. These are attached by wire staples, flattened onto a leather core lined with black sheepskin. The left chin strap is fitted at its end with a small tenon for attaching the other chin strap, in which a notch has been cut. The upper scale of each chin strap is covered with a movable, gilt brass rosette, independent of the chin strap. The helmet is topped with a smooth, removable spike for attaching a Haarbusch (headband), and features a beaded throat pierced with two ventilation holes as per regulations. It is fixed to a round base riveted with four gilt star-shaped rivets. The sweatband is made of soft, brown-coated canvas, edged at the top with scallops. Two light brown silk hemispheres protect the crown of the head. Germany. Second Reich. Specimen in perfect condition.
