Capital Decorated With Foliage And Grapes

Capital decorated with foliage and grapes

France, 13th century

Limestone

33 x 39 x 35 cm

This 13th-century French capital, carved in a pale limestone, has a broad, slightly flaring form typical of Gothic architecture. Below the abacus and a simple, flat molding, the body of the capital is richly adorned with vegetal motifs.

Large, deeply carved leaves unfurl from the base, their edges thick and softly rounded, capturing the fluid movement of foliage rather than precise botanical realism. The leaves overlap and curl outward, creating a sense of expansion and vitality. At the upper corners, clusters of grapes emerge beneath the leaf tips, adding depth and texture. The carving shows lively tool marks, especially in the recessed areas, enhancing the sense of organic growth.

The overall composition is symmetrical yet animated, with the foliage appearing to rise naturally around the capital’s circumference.
