Wool Tapestry - Egypt, Late Antique Period, 5th–7th Century C.e.
Wool Tapestry, Egypt
Late Antique Period, 5th–7th Century C.E.
Linen and wool
10 × 18.4 cm
Fragment of a band decorated with geometric motifs in red and black.
Woven in Egypt during the Byzantine period, this piece reflects the refinement of Coptic workshops, whose creations strongly influenced early Islamic art. Such fragments often adorned tunics, a key garment of the Late Antique era.
Remarkably preserved thanks to Egypt’s arid climate, Coptic textiles were rediscovered in the late 19th century through the excavations of Albert Gayet. Displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, they sparked a true “Coptomania,” inspiring artists such as Rodin and Matisse.
Comparable examples are held in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Palazzo Madama in Turin.
