A student of Portalis, Georges Hyon began his career as an illustrator at the Journal Amusant in the late 1860s. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1875 until his death, presenting military scenes ranging from Napoleon I to the Third Republic. After 1891, he worked at the newspaper l'Illustration. Our large canvas is a cavalry review representing the 2nd Lancers regiment, with their characteristic daffodil color. These troops are reviewed by their colonel as well as a general who has not been identified.
