Jacques Joseph Léopold Loustau (1815–1894)
Family Stroll
Oil on canvas, dated 1893
Dimensions: 65 × 54.5 cm
Inscription on the reverse: “Pour Madame Marguerite – 1894”
A touching genre scene signed L. Loustau 1893, depicting a family walking along a country path. In the foreground, two children walk side by side, while a group of elegantly dressed adults and children follows behind, some shaded by colorful parasols. Their natural postures, the soft modeling, and the filtered light reflect a late 19th-century style already sensitive to the flowing lines and decorative harmonies characteristic of early Art Nouveau.
The composition is balanced, with graceful silhouettes, tall vertical trees, and a gentle palette of greens, ochres, and rosy greys that creates a peaceful, luminous atmosphere. Loustau, deaf and mute since childhood, demonstrates his talent for capturing gestures and everyday expressions, giving the scene an intimate and tender quality.
ProvenanceOn the reverse appears a handwritten dedication:
“Pour Madame Marguerite – 1894.”
This inscription, made in the very year of the artist’s death, suggests that the painting was intended as a personal gift, probably to a companion, close friend, or benefactor. Painted in 1893, the work belongs to the final period of Loustau’s career and carries a strong emotional resonance.
ConditionThe canvas shows a few small holes and areas of wear, visible in the photographs. A light restoration is recommended to stabilize the surface and unify the pictorial layer.
