The bathtub is decorated with two butterflies and, on either side, a mask of Apollo* with butterfly wings. *Besides the Greek deity, Apollo is a butterfly with spotted wings. A young boy washing his feet, sponge and towel in hand, sits on a stool before a cheval glass surmounted by a pediment adorned with a flame, heart, quiver, and bow. Water from a fountain flows into a basin. The fountain is made of gilt and silvered bronze.
The shuttle-shaped base is decorated with a frieze of hearts with palmettes, separated by arrows. It rests on four ball feet. The circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals is bordered by a black line. The hands are gilt bronze. The counter-enamel (reverse of the dial) is signed TURLAY in Rouen (this is a mark the enameller applies to identify the owner, who is usually the clockmaker).
