Pair of ewers in chased, gilt, and patinated bronze resting on a pedestal. The ovoid body with a brown patina is highlighted by a gilt bronze frieze. It is decorated with openwork palmettes and lotus leaves.
The griffin-headed handles end in a scroll resting on a satyr's head.
Square base in sea green marble (minor restoration on one of the two marbles).
The pair presents its period matte and glossy mercury gilding as well as its period patina.
The quality of the casting, the chasing, and the gilding (see details in photos) allows us to attribute this pair to A.A. Ravrio without much difficulty.
Height 37 cm
Condition report: good condition, thick gilding. Minor repair on a handle of no importance (see photo).
Our pair is almost identical (differing by the frieze and a griotte marble) to the one featured in the background of a painting dating from 1812 depicting Antoine André RAVRIO and painted by Henri-François RIESENER. The painting is preserved at the Louvre under inventory INV 7488.
H.E. Riesener was the son of the famous cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener and the cousin of André-Antoine Ravrio.
A.A. Ravrio (1757-1814) was one of the most famous bronze casters, along with Thomire, Galle, Ledure, Denière, Feuchère, and others. He was admitted to the rank of master in 1777. Through the quality of his work, he gained notoriety, supplying a prestigious clientele, including the first emperor and foreign courts
