Object description :

"Fjerdingstad For Gallia/christofle: "melon" Pitcher/carafe, Silver-plated Metal. Art Deco, C. 1930"
A silver-plated metal pitcher by Christian Fjerdingstad for Gallia.

The pitcher rests on a small, four-lobed foot. The body is formed by four large ribs, which give this piece of silverware its name: Melone.

Originally from Denmark, Christian Fjerdingstad was born in 1891. He settled in Paris in 1915, where he met many artists, including Fernand Léger, who encouraged him to exhibit at the 1921 Salon d'Automne. Following his success there, he worked at Christofle from 1924 to 1939 and designed this model in 1926. He is recognized as one of the forerunners of the Art Deco style that emerged during this period.

The pitcher bears the Gallia silversmith's hallmark and the model number 5885.

A superb pitcher, emblematic of the collaboration between Christian Fjerdingstad and Christofle and of the artistic revival of the interwar period.
