Travel Guitar Signed Di Mauro, 1960 - Good Playing Condition - Musical Instruments
Artist: Di Mauro
A small vintage guitar from the 1950s, signed Di Mauro.
This is a rare model due to its size, which corresponds to that of a travel guitar. Overall dimensions: 82 cm. Vibrating string length: 57 cm. Width at the zero fret: 42 mm. Metal strings. It features a floating bridge and metal tailpiece similar to those found on jazz guitars. Its size makes this instrument suitable for a child. The top is made of spruce. The back and sides are mahogany. Tuners have Bakelite buttons. Mahogany neck with 17 frets plus the zero fret.
The tailpiece is a recent addition; the period-correct tuners cover part of the brand name, suggesting they may not be the original ones. Di Mauro guitars are famous, especially for their jazz guitars, particularly for the creation of the "Special Chorus" jazz model, which features S-shaped geese on the top, reminiscent of those found on string quartet instruments such as violins and cellos. Let's also mention the Rosace Cœur jazz guitar, the Boogie Woogie model played by Django Reinhardt. At the time, many famous artists used Selmer-type jazz guitars or other classically shaped models strung with steel strings.
Examples include Jacques Brel, Henri Salvador, Georges Brassens of course, but also Sacha Distel, Les Compagnons de la Chanson with the Special Chorus, Pat Metheny, and even more recently Jacques Higelin with his Di Mauro Rosace Cœur guitar. Speaking of Di Mauro, it's a dynasty of luthiers that began with Joseph Di Mauro Sr., who arrived in Paris in 1925 and worked for the luthier Gallesi before taking over the business in the 1950s. Then Antoine Di Mauro and his son Joseph Di Mauro continued the reputation of the Di Mauro workshop through their creations and craftsmanship.
