Pair Of English Engravings – Carington Bowles, London, C. 1770–1785
Artist: Carington Bowles
A fine pair of humorous English engravings from the late 18th century, published in London by Carington Bowles, the renowned print dealer located at No. 69 St. Paul's Church Yard, active between 1760 and 1790. These two scenes, entitled “Mirth and Friendship” and “Night Amusement,” belong to the great tradition of British drolls: heartwarming caricatures and tavern scenes with exaggerated expressions, typical of Georgian England. The figures are depicted humorously in a convivial atmosphere of music, drink, and camaraderie. Hand-colored mezzotint/aquatint on laid paper. Authentic editions bearing the inscription: “Printed for Carington Bowles, Map & Printseller, No. 69 in St. Paul's Church Yard, London.” Circa 1770–1785. Frames: 51 × 41 cm (visible image dimensions slightly smaller). Very good overall condition for their age. Some minor wear to the margins. Fresh colors. Contemporary wooden frames, ready to hang. Beautiful, typically British, decorative, and characterful humorous depictions.
