Mid-20th-century rug. These rugs are called: "Kazak with Eagles," "Kazak Adler" (eagle in German),
"Kazak with Coat of Arms," and also "Kazak with Swords."
The designs are typical of this genre and therefore easily recognizable among the many rug designs of the Caucasus and Armenia.
The English call them "Kazakh Sunburst."
Some see in them the figurative flight of an eagle, crossed swords, or ancient coats of arms reminiscent of the double-headed eagle on the noble crests of the former Russian and German empires, which is why they are called "Kazak Adler."
Seychour rugs also feature a very typical design. Sophisticated, resembling a stylized bird, yet their geographical origin is much more distant, near the Caspian Sea.
Our model is from Armenia; the colors are very Anatolian, Anatolia being nearby, and the wool is supple and of beautiful quality. The border is typically Turkish with the carnation flower, present on the two bands framing the border.
The central green medallion stands out against a powerful and sharp red field, making this piece an exceptional and unusual rug. This rug remains a Kazak with an uncommon design and color arrangement.
I invite you to view our other Caucasian rugs, and in particular our Chelaberd rugs, a style for which I have a deep passion.
The last photo shows a Kazak Chelaberd rug featured in our Proantic gallery.
