Hand-knotted Kashan kork wool rug, circa 1900-1920.
It measures 131 cm wide by 207 cm long, with 490,000 knots per square meter.
The central motif, featuring eight flowers in a medallion juxtaposed with a smaller, also floral one, has two prominent halberd-shaped pendants running the length of the piece.
It depicts a large, stylized, open flower surrounded by numerous other flowers and interlacing patterns.
Lotus blossoms, Monabbat-kari peonies, and palm fronds cover the field.
The border, composed of various motifs, alternating palmettes and branches, is inspired by ancient Herat designs.
The rug is in very good condition overall, with a clean pile, impeccable (restored) selvedges, and very short fringes.
The overall condition is excellent; there is no shrinkage, and the fine kork wool used is of the highest quality.
The numerous colors are Fresh, high-quality, with no fading or sun damage. Numerous blues, red, ivory, etc.
This beautiful antique rug originates from Iran and was knotted during the Qajar dynasty, before 1925.
Kashan (Kachan, Keshan): a major city in central Iran.
During the Persian Renaissance, Kashan was the center of rug production, renowned for its legendary splendor.
Finely woven rugs of exceptionally rich composition were knotted by the royal manufactory of Shah Abbas.
They became centerpieces in museums and private collections.
Rug production ceased in Kashan between the Afghan invasion (1722) and the end of the 19th century.
The revival of rug production began with rugs distinguished by the superior quality of the wool, giving them an extremely velvety appearance. These examples are called Kashan Motashemi, named after the most famous master weaver of the late 19th century.
The designs They are varied and offer meticulous craftsmanship: hunting scenes, figurative subjects inspired by Persian mythology, birds in a verdant setting, trees of life.
Thanks to the superior quality of the wool, their tight knotting, and the beauty of their natural colors and designs, Kashan rugs have taken their place among the finest Persian carpets.
