Late 17th / Early 18th* Superb and spectacular early engraving after a composition by Jacques Callot (1592–1635), bearing the inscription "Jac. Callot Inven.", attesting that it is a faithful reproduction of a subject conceived by the Lorraine master. The scene depicts the Temptation of Saint Anthony, a mythical theme for Callot: fantastic creatures, grotesque demons, baroque chaos, precise lines, and a profusion of detail. Engraved dedication: The plate bears a large dedication to Abbot Jean-Paul Bignon (1662–1743), Councillor of State and President of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres.
