The work abandons the gallant idealism of the Rococo style, embracing instead the vitality and realism of Flemish genre scenes. The tapestry draws direct inspiration from the themes and composition of the kermesses (folk festivals) painted by David Teniers II (1610-1690) and other Flemish masters, subverting solemnity with the effervescence of rural life. The central scene unfolds in a lively Flemish farmhouse. Breaking with formality, the work captures the earthly joy and simple pleasure of ordinary people: a man and a woman, dressed in peasant costumes, twirl in a ländler, a folk dance, to the lively rhythm of a bagpiper. The tapestry seeks neither mythology nor heroism, but rather the pure joy of community life.
