"Portrait Of Louis XVI, King Of France, Bourbon, Versailles, Marie Antoinette, Noble Nobility "
Portrait of King Louis XVI of France, original oil on canvas, late 18th century. Louis Auguste of France was born on August 23, 1754, in Versailles. He was 19 years old when his grandfather, King Louis XV, died. He became King of France and Navarre from May 10, 1774, to September 13, 1791, at which time he became King of the French, a title he held until September 21, 1792. He married Marie Antoinette in 1770. He died by guillotine in Paris on January 21, 1793. Few portraits from this period survived the French Revolution. Portraits of previous kings have generally been preserved. Portraits of Louis XVI suffered the destructive fury of the revolutionaries. The portrait I am offering is "in its original condition," with a few minor losses of paint, nothing serious. Cleaning would be advisable to restore the original colors (one of my photos of the king's face was taken after using a slightly damp sponge, which briefly brings out the original, more vibrant colors, which you will see again after cleaning). Louis XVI is dressed in a rich blue velvet coat embroidered with gold thread, and he wears the Order of the Holy Spirit and the Order of Saint Louis. He is also wearing the powdered wig that was fashionable at the end of the 18th century. This painting is presented in its original wooden frame, which has a few chips. Dimensions with frame: 74.50 cm x 64 cm. Image size: 63 cm x 52 cm.
