"Portrait Of A 17th-century Nobleman, Church Follower Philippe De Champaigne, Oil On Canvas, Louis XIII, Regency Period "
A 17th-century portrait from the Louis XIII period, depicting a lawyer, scholar, or religious figure. The rather austere style and presence of this portrait are reminiscent of certain works by Philippe de Champaigne and his students. This high-ranking individual is dressed in a black suit with a very wide, starched, and angular collar, typical of the years 1630-1650, turned down. This collar, known as a "Richelieu collar," was worn at the court of Louis XIII and during the Regency of Anne of Austria. The high forehead, fine nose, short mustache, and goatee are characteristic of portraits of educated men of this era. The treatment of the suit and skin, without impasto, and the dark background emphasize the face, the painting's main subject. This is an oil painting on canvas, later mounted, most likely in the 19th century, onto a solid, thick panel. As you can see in the photos, there are some losses of paint in the background and traces of rubbing. The face is intact. This painting is in its original condition, just as I found it.
