General Presentation
A refined late 19th-century French pedestal crafted in beautifully veneered mahogany and richly adorned with finely chased gilt-bronze mounts. The craftsmanship is of high quality throughout, with crisp bronze details and a perfectly restored mahogany veneer.
Structure and Composition
The tripod base, characteristic of French work inspired by the Louis XVI revival and the major Parisian cabinetmakers of the late 1800s, rests on three sculptural hoof-shaped feet, decorated with foliage appliqués. The gilt-bronze mounts — gently cleaned while preserving their original gilding — display excellent casting quality with sharply defined ornamentation.
Decoration and Ornamentation
The central body features garlands, leafy swags and scrollwork in gilt bronze. The three supports are connected by a turned mahogany element carved with acanthus leaves, giving rhythm and visual balance to the structure.
The upper frieze is encircled by an openwork gilt-bronze gallery with intertwined motifs and palmettes, adding refinement and lightness.
Top
The pedestal is topped with a circular rotating marble top in warm yellow tones, comparable to Italian Giallo Siena marbles. The original rotating mechanism is fully functional. The harmony between marble, mahogany and gilt bronze gives the piece an elegant and luxurious presence.
Condition
Fully restored and in excellent condition. The mahogany veneer has been revived, the finish is smooth and even, and the structure is perfectly stable. The bronzes retain their original gilding, which has been cleaned but not re-gilded. The piece is ready for immediate display.
