Biedermeier Box, Walnut On Oak, Marquetry, Southern Germany, Circa 1850
The antique box is made of walnut veneered over maple and solid walnut with numerous inlays of precious woods, maple, and ebony. The top of the lid features an oval motif depicting a peasant couple inlaid in stained wood against a broad ebony background. It also has an inlaid brass coat of arms and a black knob with a white dot on the lid. The chest has a functional iron lock, brass hinges, and a brass chain. It has been restored and hand-polished with shellac.
