Bronze Sculpture, Woman On A Sofa, Signed A. Canova, Paris Circa 1950
Artist: A. Canova
Massive bronze figurine of a woman reclining on a couch, "Paolina Borghese as Venus Victorious" - a famous motif by A. Canova, from Paris around 1950.
Engraved on the base "A. Canova" (Antonio Canova, 1757-1822), arguably the most famous sculptor of Classicism.
Foundry mark: "JB Deposee, Bronze Garanti Paris", dark brown patina. Resting on a rectangular black marble base. Canova created the world-famous sculpture "Paolina Borghese as Venus Victorious" between 1805 and 1808, which depicts his sister-in-law Paolina Bonaparte reclining on a daybed, scantily clad. This is a high-quality reproduction in heavy bronze, probably made in Paris in the mid-20th century.
