Early 17th Century Venetian Patera In Istrian Stone
Unique and antique round patera in Istrian stone. The patera features a lion and a griffin carved in bas-relief, battling each other. This object once adorned an ancient Venetian palace; paterae were typical wall decorations of the Venetian lagoon, widespread since the Middle Ages, found on both secular and religious architecture, and reminiscent of subjects and themes from earlier Byzantine art. This is a particularly valuable and significant object, capable of lending a touch of antiquity to any space. Venetian manufacture (Venice, Northern Italy), early 17th century.
