This dish is distinguished by its remarkable shape and decoration: The dish has an irregular silhouette evoking a stylized mountain—probably Mount Fuji—in its upper part, and a waterfall in its lower part.
It is painted in Gosu blue (a cobalt oxide-based pigment). A koi carp is depicted leaping upwards through a curtain of water forming a waterfall.
The background is decorated with stylized waves (seigaiha motif), a classic Japanese motif symbolizing the sea and continuity.
The carp swimming upstream is a symbol of perseverance, courage, and success in Japan. It represents the strength required to swim against the current and is associated with the legend of the carp that transforms into a dragon after passing through the waterfall at Dragon Gate.
