It is depicted in close-up. With its head slightly lowered, it wears a dark coat that contrasts with the deep green of the meadow. A few hens are nearby. A tree with bare branches stands in the background.
The brushstrokes are broad and rapid, the colors vibrant.
The work is clean and in very good condition. There is an old repair visible on the back, but not on the front. The work is signed in the lower left corner. It is presented in a late 19th-century stuccoed gilt frame, in good condition (with some minor imperfections in the gilding).
The artist
Clovis Frédérick Léopold Terraire was born in Marseille in 1858 but spent most of his life in Lyon.
He exhibited at the Lyon Salon as well as the Salon des Artistes Français. He received the Rosa-Bonheur Prize in 1927.
Clovis Terraire painted numerous landscapes of the area surrounding his town and the region: Bugey and Bresse, Dauphiné, Haute-Savoie, and Switzerland. He excelled at capturing aquatic scenes under soft lighting.
Also an animal painter, he specialized in depicting grazing cows.
His works have been sold at auction on numerous occasions.
