A work from the 18th century in the south of France, this freestanding sculpture of Saint Matthias is carved and gilded in wood with uniform polychromy.
Dressed in classical style, he carries an axe, the Holy Scriptures, and a purse. Saint Matthias is not frequently depicted. "We must resist our flesh, attribute no value to it, and concede nothing to it to flatter it, but rather strengthen the elevation of our soul through Faith and Knowledge," he taught.
Chosen by divine providence to replace Judas, he is the twelfth of our apostles. His iconographic attribute is the instrument of his martyrdom. Scripture tells us that he was killed on a cross by a fatal blow from an axe.
In good condition, despite some minor losses.
Dimensions: 48 cm high x 17 cm wide x 12 cm deep.
