The central panel of the backrest features a finely carved rosette of Gothic inspiration, framed by floral motifs and vertical ogival tracery. It is surmounted by a stylized vegetal frieze, characteristic of late Louis XIII or transitional Louis XIV ornamentation.
The overall decoration, while restrained, shows precise and balanced execution, testifying to quality craftsmanship.
The rectangular seat opens to reveal an integrated storage chest (during this period most commonly used for storing liturgical objects or books). The piece displays a handsome brown patina.
It has undergone routine restoration. The top cornice and bottom panel are later elements, resulting from earlier interventions.
This seat, symbolizing spiritual or seigneurial authority, was most often intended for ecclesiastical dignitaries or bourgeois households. It represents the transition between Louis XIII and Louis XIV styles.
