"the Fortune Teller" - Alexis Mathonat (1832-1904)
Artist: Alexis Mathonat
Alexis Mathonat, born in 1832 in Moulins (Allier, France), was a student of Thomas Couture, a painter who taught during the Second Empire. Active as a portraitist and painter of historical scenes, Mathonat here belongs to the Troubadour/Romantic tradition, a type of scene very popular in France between 1830 and 1880.
The canvas depicts a sentimental scene of literary or folkloric inspiration. A young couple, elegantly dressed in costumes from the late 18th or early 19th century, strolls in a theatrical natural setting, composed mainly of a rock and a tree, with a sky in the background that is becoming overcast despite the apparent sunshine. An elderly woman, perhaps a Bohemian, sits on the rock, seemingly reading the young woman's palm (observing her interaction with the young couple).
The painting has been professionally cleaned (before/after photographs available). It is presented in its original gilt frame.
Dimensions:
- Painting: 65 cm (width) x 54.5 cm (height)
- With frame: 92 cm (width) x 79 cm (height)
