He himself estimated, a year before his death, to have produced more than ten thousand drawings, but still found the time to work ten hours a day at idyllic and voluptuous representations of classical, mythological and erotic themes, decorative allegories and pastoral scenes. He was a painter of the court of Louis XV and the favorite of the Marquise de Pompadour, of whom he painted several portraits.
