French Village Landscape (riverside) By Mario Carl-rosa (french, 1853 - 1913)
This painting is the pair of the previous article. This village landscape (riverside) in the French provinces was painted by the French painter Mario (Marie Cornilleau Raoul) Carl-Rosa (1853 Loudon/Vienne - 1913 Garches).
Before devoting himself to painting, C. worked as a journalist for various newspapers: La Presse, La Cocarde, Le National (including art magazines).
C. exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1884 to 1911, and from 1899 at the Société nationale de la BA (Le Petit-Andely and the ruins of Château-Gaillard [November 1898], location unknown), as well as in the provinces: Salon de Grenoble and Salon de la Société des Amis des Arts de Nantes (1890-1904).
C.'s early works, produced around 1830, are influenced by realism, both in their colors and in motifs such as the flock of sheep in a pasture.
Later, his pictorial style became more individual, with sharper contours and accentuated color contrasts, notably in many paintings of Eastern France (Domrémy, the homeland of Joan of Arc, Salon of 1901, the location of which is unknown) and in seascapes. C. donated many paintings, others were purchased by foreign visitors, notably by Pope Pius X, Tsar Alexander III (A Village in Lorraine, 1892) and the Bey of Tunis (Old Houses of Argenton, 1892). He participated in the creation of the Golden Salon of the Le Train bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon: View of Lake Aiguebelette (two replicas from 1902 and 1904 in private collections). C. founded the ABA of the Champs-Elysées and for a time directed the free art classes in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
