Size of the painting alone without frame 46x55cm Provenance: - Flavian Collection, Dumousset-Deburaux, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, June 18, 1998, lot 366 - Sale, Modern paintings-Breton schools-Pont Aven school-Concarneau group, Thierry-Lannon, Douarnenez, July 21, 2001, lot 181 (titled Port du Rosmeur in Douarnenez) This is therefore a very beautiful post-impressionist composition by Paul Morchain who paints here one of his favorite subjects, the port of Douarnenez with its fishing boats, some with sails out, others with blue nets drying and we can also see in the foreground two sailors busy at the caulking or applying antifouling to a boat. As usual, he also takes particular care of his sky, superb, so typical of Breton skies, his palette is also very typical with its reds/brick, blues, silver gray etc...Paul Morchain, born December 27, 1876 in Rochefort where he died October 26, 1939, is a French painter and museum curator. He obtained an honorable mention in 1909, a silver medal in 1913 and a gold medal in 1920. In 1921, he became Official Painter of the Navy. He mainly represents Breton landscapes on his canvases, some portraits or various genre scenes as in 1924, where he presents Les Beaux jours. He painted the regions of Concarneau, La Rochelle, Brest, Morlaix, then returned each year to Douarnenez where he took up residence. In July 1931, while he was traveling with his wife Madeleine Muck (1884-1931) to Douarnenez, the car skidded. Seriously injured by shards of glass in the throat, Madeleine died at the family home.
