Big Baining mask, known as "kavat" in the vernacular. Large, three-dimensional mask. Danced during an initiation ceremony of the Baining ethnic group in northern New Britain. This traditional dance takes place around a huge fire full of embers. Wood, paper mulberry bark called tapa, stretched over a wicker frame, natural pigments, and felt-tip pens.
