"Yena Cult Figure, Statue, Melanesian Tribal Art, Oceanic Art, Primitive Art, Sculpture, 57cm"
Small "yena" cult figure collected in the village of Nagri in Papua New Guinea (Nokuma ethnic group). The yena figure is associated with the first ceremony organized to celebrate the yam harvest (a cycle of three ceremonies in all), a sacred tuber venerated throughout Melanesia. This sculpture symbolizes the planting period and evokes the tuber as well as the digging stick used for its transplantation. These traditions are still strong in the Washkuk hills area. Piece made of wood and natural pigments sold mounted on a base. 57x 14 cm / €250 base and shipping included.
