Kwoma painted pangal collected in the Washkuk hills area in Papua New Guinea. These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the inner sides of roofs as well as the pediments of ceremonial houses, and represent in an abstract or figurative way the ancestors or beliefs of the clans. Assembled together, they line the ceilings and pediments of these large, prestigious huts. In its permanent collection, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art features a complete reconstruction of a hut roof decorated with painted bark of this type. Sago bark and natural pigments.
